The 2009 Sebring is available as a front-wheel-drive, four-door sedan or a two-door convertible with a retractable hardtop or traditional soft-top. The Sebring is identifiable by its grooved hood: giving the vehicle its sleek appearance. The current Chrysler Sebring was introduced as a four-door sedan for the 2007 model year, and then a two-door convertible was added in mid-2007 as a 2008 model.  For 2009 a few luxury interior features are added to the trim levels, and a power top is no longer standard on the base model convertible. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes are now standard across the lineup, while traction and stability control are now available on Limited and Touring models. An all-wheel drive option on Limited sedans has been discontinued, and the LX trim has been removed from the sedan. The main benefits of the Sebring are its smooth highway ride, it four cylinder fuel efficiency, it four speed's automatic performance, and for the convertible, the top-down styling.  The downsides for this 2009 Chrysler model are its weak four cylinder highway acceleration, and narrow front seat cushions. The Sebring competes in the mid-sized sedan class; competitors include the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion, while the convertible goes head-to-head with the Pontiac G6, Volkswagen Eos and Toyota Camry Solara convertibles. The Sebring gets an EPA Fuel Economy of 21/30 mpg (city/highway).

Sebring Power
The 2009 Chrysler Sebring is offered with three engine options. The standard base engine is an inline 2.4 liter four-cylinder model, which offers 173 hp and is of course the most fuel-efficient. V6 options include a 2.7-liter model with 186 horsepower, rated for 19/27 mpg. A top-of-the-line 3.5-liter V6 is offered on Limited models. It has more power with 235 horsepower, but one of the lowest fuel-economy ratings in the midsize class at 16/27, even with a more advanced six-speed transmission with autostick shift capability. The 2.7-liter V-6 can run on regular or E85 fuel and is optional in the base model and standard on the Sebring Touring and Limited. The Sebring Limited is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick manual shifting; other engines have a four-speed automatic. Both V-6 engines are rated to tow up to 1,000 pounds.

2009 Sebring Design
The Chrysler Sebring competes in the ultra-competitive midsize car category with more daring looks and unique features than most of its competitors, including offering a convertible version. The Sebring has a rather typical sedan design; with large C-pillars and a stubby trunk. 17-inch steel wheels are standard; seventeen- and 18-inch alloy wheels are optional. The size of the 2009 Sebring is about average for its class, at 190.6 inches long, it is roughly the same length as the Camry, Accord and Fusion. Its height is 59 inches, exceeding all three competitors by more than an inch.  The sedan's trunk has 13.6 cubic feet of cargo room, but the opening is quite small, making it difficult to get larger items in.

As far as the convertible goes, its front end is the same as the sedan's, featuring hood strakes, a grille and headlights reminiscent of the Crossfire roadster. The availability of a retractable hardtop convertible distinguishes the Sebring lineup from its popular competitors. The Sebring convertible offers a choice of vinyl or cloth soft tops or the retractable hard top.  The convertible adds over about 400 pounds to the car's curb weight, and the convertible roof stows beneath a hard tonneau cover. The convertible's trunk opens like a normal trunk with any of the tops up or down and has 13.1 cubic feet of cargo room. Cargo room shrinks to 6.6 cubic feet with the top down.  Access to the trunk with the top retracted is very restricted.

Driving the Chrysler Sebring
The four cylinder is largely under powered, although it gets the best fuel economy.  Especially driving at highway speeds, the performance falls short. The smaller V6 is not much better as far as power and acceleration go. And both drive on an antiquated four-speed automatic transmission. The 3.5 liter V6, however, offers great performance and is well suited to power the Sebring. Ride quality is generally pleasant, soaking up most bumps well. Handling is competent in the sedan. The convertible lacks the driving feel of the sedan however.

Cabin Features - 2009
The 2009 Sebring has a cabin with basic needs and a simple layout.  It includes three backlit instrument portals, a two-tone dashboard and an analog clock. The sedan's trunk is on the small side, and the convertible's is even smaller.  The front passenger seat has an optional fold-flat feature to accommodate longer cargo passed through the 60/40-split folding rear seat. A windscreen is standard on convertible Limited models; it stands behind the front headrests to help reduce noise and turbulence commonly associated with convertibles. Opting for the Convenience Group Package on the base convertible adds a power top. The Sebring sedan offers competitive passenger room, with plenty of room up front and a useful rear seat. The sedan seats five. The convertible offers good interior space up front. It seats four passengers, but the rear seat lacks the legroom to make it comfortable for adults to sit back there on long trips. The Sebring cabin is pleasant. The look is sleek, and it is all nicely integrated and finished. Some of the interior surfaces are cold and hard to the touch, however. With an available DVD rear-seat entertainment system, navigation and uconnect, the Sebring's available technology is as good as or better than anything in the class.

Closing Thoughts
As far as the Chrysler Sebring lineup goes, the LX convertible ($28,130) features a vinyl soft top, six-way power front seats, power mirrors, air conditioning, rear defroster, a six-speaker sound system and 16-inch wheels and tires. Touring convertible ($30,610) adds premium trim items, temperature gauge and compass, tire-pressure monitor, Touring suspension, power heated mirrors and 17-inch wheels and tires. Limited sedan models are at the top, and come with leather trim, air conditioning, steering-wheel mounted audio controls, theft alarm, an eight-way power driver's seat, AM/FM/MP3 with six-disc CD changer, and a trip computer. Some options are grouped into packages, including an Electronic Convenience Group, which includes automatic air conditioning, fog lamps, a heated and cooled front console and cupholder, temperature gauge and compass, map lights, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, remote start, garage-door opener, and tire pressure monitor. Safety features include four-wheel ABS, tire pressure monitoring, front, side and curtain airbags.
